Menopause can sneak up on women when we least expect it and symptoms can last seven and a half years in average and for some symptoms can last significantly longer.

As you get older your reproductive cycle begins to slow down and prepares to stop. This cycle has been continuously functioning since puberty. As menopause nears, your ovaries make less of the hormone called estrogen. When this decrease occurs, your menstrual cycle (period) starts to change. It can become irregular and then stop. Physical changes can also happen as your body adapts to different levels of hormones. Night sweats, hot flashes, vaginal dryness are just a few of the symptoms that woman will experience. These symptoms are all part of your body’s adjustment to these changes of your hormones.

Menopause is also often timed with our natural aging and muscle mass diminishing which can slow the rate our body uses calories. While you may be more likely to add on and retain weight around your abdomen and thighs during this time of your life, it is not inevitable.

Menopause is not a disease and the goal for all of us is to slip in and out of menopause barely noticing any changes. Out diet, lifestyle, sleep habits and environmental toxins play a huge role in how one is affected.
