What is holistic nutrition?
Holistic simply means “treating the body as a whole”
Basically, holistic nutrition is healing with whole foods. As simple as this sounds, this concept has become confusing and misrepresented. Whole foods are complete and perfect in their natural state. They are as nature intended and contain balanced ratios of vitamins, minerals, fats, carbohydrates, sugars, and countless other vital nutrients. They are not altered, stripped, or refined in any way and our bodies know how to break them down and utilize them in the most efficient way possible. Whole food is preferably organic, seasonal, and local whenever possible. This ensures that they are fresh, full of nutrients, with little to no contamination from pesticides, chemicals, or additives. This is the perfect example of holistic nutrition.
What is a Registered Holistic Nutritionist?
A R.H.N. (registered holistic nutritionist), is a professional trained in natural nutrition whose principal function is to educate individuals and groups about the benefits and health impact of optimal nutrition.
A holistic nutritionist focuses on the whole person, acknowledging that everyone is an individual, and therefore, has individual needs. The goal is to unify the physical, nutritional, emotional, environmental, and spiritual components of a client’s life to promote health and well-being.
A holistic nutritionist believes that there is no one diet or lifestyle that is right for everyone. What worked well for one person will not necessarily be the best plan of action for another. There is no miracle food or herb that will cure everything, but they will educate and work with you to find the best food, supplement and lifestyle choices for YOU. They will help you make sense of all the health information that is surrounding you on a daily basis from TV, magazines, media or even your best friend.
What is the difference between a nutritionist and a dietitian?
A nutritionist is similar to a dietitian, but they are different. A dietitian is trained institutionally and they work in places such as hospitals, retirement homes and other government run establishments. Dietitians are trained to follow the Canada Food Guide when dealing with clients and create meal plans according to those guidelines.
Nutritionists are familiar with and often trained in a variety of treatments alongside their standard nutritional training. Complementary treatments can include homeopathy, massage therapy, Ayurveda, herbal medicine, energy medicine and personal trainers. These fields have a great significance when dealing with clients nutritionally and together can have tremendous results.
Are nutritionist covered by insurance companies?
The services of RHN’s are covered by some extended healthcare plans. Please inquire with your insurance provider to confirm coverage.
